A four-session workshop where children build, test, and improve a small wheeled robot through observation and experiment.
A robot is a wonderful question in physical form. Why did it turn too early? What changes when a wheel is larger? How can a machine sense the edge of a table? In this workshop, children discover that engineering begins with noticing—not with already knowing the answer.
We begin by watching a tiny rover follow a line across the table. The children sketch what they think is happening inside it, then compare their ideas. Before anyone opens a parts tray, each learner has made a prediction and found a reason to care about the mechanism.
Building happens slowly enough for every choice to remain visible. Children fit the chassis, axles, wheels, motor, and sensor themselves. I demonstrate with a separate model, then step back. A wheel attached the wrong way is not a mistake to hide; it is useful evidence about balance, friction, and alignment.
The first test is rarely perfect. Robots drift, stop, or turn in circles. We measure what happened, change one thing, and try again. This rhythm—observe, imagine, build, test, revise—is the real subject of the class. The finished robot matters, but the habit of thoughtful iteration matters more.
In the final session, teams design a cardboard course for one another. They must explain the challenge, record their robot’s behaviour, and make one considered improvement. Children leave with a working machine, a maker’s notebook, and the confidence that complicated systems can be understood piece by piece.
